AMY R. WORK, LCMHC, RPT

Not currently accepting new clients.

I believe that every individual has inherent value, and that life is to be fully experienced and enjoyed. Too often, the stresses and traumas of life prevent us from stepping into who we really want to be.  It's my passion to come alongside kids, teens, and adults, and support them in the journey towards peace and health.

My therapeutic approach begins from a client-centered perspective, which addresses the unique needs of each person. From there, I primarily work from a cognitive-behavioral framework which asserts that identifying and changing harmful thought patterns can lead to reduced emotional distress and a more satisfying life. I am also trained to incorporate EMDR, Internal Family Systems, DBT Skills, and Sand Tray Therapy as needed. In working with children, I use Child-Centered Play Therapy to help children process trauma, express and regulate emotions, build confidence, and develop social skills.  We will work together to design a treatment plan that is right for you. Click here to learn more about the clinical issues I address.

The letters after my name (above) stand for Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC), and Registered Play Therapist (RPT). I hold a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC, and am currently pursuing my Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I earned Bachelors Degrees in Psychology and Sociology from The University of Georgia, as well as a minor in Child and Family Development. As an active member of the American Counseling Association and the Association for Play Therapy, I continuously pursue up-to-date training on evidence-based mental health treatments. I am also privileged to sit on the Advisory Board of FOR STUDENTS, an organization dedicated to preparing students to become resilient and healthy adults.

Prior to becoming a counselor, I worked as a high school teacher and enjoyed adapting my classroom for students with specific behavioral, emotional, or academic needs. Additionally I served as the Elementary Children's Director at my church.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my husband and son, running and exercising, reading, trying new recipes, drinking coffee, and all things Harry Potter.

I am passionate about helping children, teens, and adults find hope in the midst of life's many challenges. Integrating client-centered and cognitive-behavioral approaches, we will work together to address painful emotions, heal negative thought-cycles, and create new behaviors you can feel good about.

I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and am thrilled to complete my first and second clinical rotations at Renewed Counseling & Play Therapy. Prior to entering the counseling field, I earned a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Liberty University and taught middle and high school science for four years. I thoroughly enjoyed working with teenagers and their families, and am grateful for the opportunity to continue serving this population as a therapist.

Growing up, I lived in Mexico for 13 years and Turkey for 4 years. I am fluent in both Spanish and English, and love to travel whenever I can. I am married with one son, and my family loves to watch movies, spend time outdoors, and engage with our local community and church. Little joys in my life include musical theater, living room dance parties, my crazy dog, and all kinds of Latin music!

It is my honor to help individuals from all walks of life process challenges and move towards healing. I am passionate about providing a safe space for children, teens, and adults to feel seen and heard as they share their stories through counseling.

I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and am working towards state licensure. I offer Child-Centered Play Therapy to children ages 3+ to process emotions and behaviors in a developmentally appropriate way, as well as talk therapy for adolescents and adults. I draw from integrated approaches including Client Centered Therapy, Internal Family Systems Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy to address challenges such as anxiety, depression, phase of life problems, trauma, attachment issues and relational strains.

Outside of the counseling space, I enjoy creating food to share with family, friends, and neighbors, being in nature with my husband and two dogs, and spending time with loved ones.
